Lateral Thinking and humour – The Two Clergymen

Lateral thinking is about changing perceptions, and humour is one of the few natural ways we experience changing perceptions.

In humour we switch, suddenly, from looking at things in one way to looking at them in another. A person telling a joke leads us along a path and then, suddenly, we see the crazy logic of the joke.  Humour tells us that the mind works in patterns and that it IS possible to switch patters.

Here is a simple example: Two clergymen were discussing the present sad state of sexual morality. “ I didn’t sleep with my wife before we were married ” one clergyman stated self- righteously. “Did you ? “

“I’m not sure,” said the other. “What was her maiden name ?”
